Sharon Christa McAuliffe (née Corrigan; – ) was an American teacher and astronaut from Concord, New Hampshire, who died on the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-51-L, where she was serving as a payload specialist. After a rigorous series of physical and psychological tests, it was announced by Vice-President George Bush on that Christa McAuliffe would be the first teacher in space. New Hampshire school teacher Christa McAuliffe died on when the space shuttle Challenger exploded.
In July 1985, Christa was selected over 11,500 other applicants to become the first Teacher In Space. As a payload specialist on the Challenger mission, she trained side by side with the other six Challenger astronauts. As the first woman and educator to be commemorated with a statue on the New Hampshire State House lawn, Christa remains an inspiration to the next generation of dreamers and achievers. Previous to Christa's current city of Dunstable, MA, Christa Livingstone lived in Lawrence MA and Pelham NH.
